The Malaysian state of Melaka is about to get brighter and greener with the installation of more than 100,000 energy efficient road lights.
AsianScientist (Jul. 13, 2016) - The Malaysian state of Melaka is about to get brighter and greener with a new agreement signed between the Asian Development Bank (ADB) and the Melaka Green Technology Corporation to install energy-efficient road lights across the state. Called the Melaka Road Lighting project, the partners plan to install over 100,000 smart light-emitting diode (LED) road lamps using a digital networked lighting system. The entire project is expected to cost around US$50 million and will be financed using private capital. In addition to improving lighting, reducing energy costs, and strengthening road safety, the project will also support Malaysia’s drive to cut its greenhouse gas emissions intensity by 40 percent by 2020, as well as contribute to the Sustainable Urban Development Program for the Indonesia-Malaysia-Thailand Growth Triangle. “We are very pleased to support the initiative of the state of Melaka to improve the efficiency of public services with the advanced technology and public-private partnerships,” said Mr. Takehiko Nakao, the president of ADB. “We hope that this project will become a leading new business model for energy efficiency that can be replicated in other parts of Asia and the Pacific.” A key feature of the project is a planned ‘pay through savings’ model with the financing costs to be reimbursed over time as a result of reduced spending on lighting through the replacement of older, more energy-intensive lamps.
